1. Plant Native Gardens : This simple act provides food and shelter for birds while supporting pollinators like butterflies and bees. Native plants are adapted to your local ecosystem, attracting native birds and creating a healthy environment for wildlife. ( Source: Audubon - Why Native Plants Are Better for Birds and People ) 2. Make Your Windows Bird-Safe : Hundreds of millions of birds die from window collisions yearly. Use films, curtains, or patterned glass to deter birds from mistaking reflections for open sky. Existing buildings can be retrofitted with these solutions and new buildings can be planned so they are more bird-friendly. (Source: Mass Audubon - Why Do Birds Fly Into Windows? ) 3. Turn Off Unnecessary Lights : Artificial light disrupts bird migration patterns and can be deadly. Use shielded, downward-facing lights, timers, sensors, and turn off unnecessary lights at night. Advocate for policies promoting dark skies. (Source: Environmental Pollution -Pre-migration ar...

Why turn off the light at night?

Image
Turn off the lights at night because bright lights confuse birds. Birds use the stars to find their way when they fly at night. Bright lights can confuse event attract them. By turning off lights, we help birds stay safe and find their way.

Why make your window visible to birds?

Image
Make your window visible to birds by using bird-friendly window treatments. Birds can't always see clear glass and fly into windows and glass doors. This can hurt and even kill them! By closing curtains or using a window film, we help birds see the glass.

Why plant native plant?

Image
Plant native flowers and trees to help birds find food and shelter. Native plants are the plants that naturally grow in your areas. Birds love them because they provide food (like seeds and berries) and places to hide or build nests. They help birds stay healthy by offering the right environment for them.

Why reduce Pesticide?

Image
Reduce pesticides to protect the insects birds need to survive. Insects are important food for birds. When we use pesticides, it can harm these insects. By using fewer chemicals, we help keep the insects healthy, as well as the birds that eat them.   Reducing pesticide use is crucial due to significant negative impacts on human health, the environment, and biodiversity. Pesticides can contaminate soil and water, harm non-target species like beneficial insects and pollinators, and pose risks to human health through accidental exposure or consumption of treated food. Reducing reliance on pesticides also promotes sustainable agriculture and helps maintain healthy ecosystems.

Why keep pets under control?

Image
Free-roaming pets can harm birds. When pets like cats of dogs roam freely outside, they might chase, hunt, or kill birds. By keeping pet on a leash, inside, or in a safe outdoor space like a "catio'' we help protect birds and keep them safe from harm.

Why say no to plastics?

Plastics can harm animals and birds. Birds and other animals can get trapped in plastic or mistake it for food. Saying no to plastic switching to reusable items helps protect the environment for birds and other animals.

Key messages.

Image
Whether in the city or the countryside, all communities can support migratory birds by  adopting bird-friendly practices . These include c reating healthy habitats, implementing effective anti-collision measures, reducing pollution, and providing ample food sources for birds . Urban expansion  can lead to habitat loss if not well planned, and cause a decline in bird nesting and feeding areas, food sources and shelter, jeopardizing  the survival of migratory birds . Non-native species such as domestic cats and non-native plants, disrupt ecosystems by  introducing new predators and competition for resources that birds need to survive . Fatal collisions  with buildings and glass are worsened by light pollution from city structures, reflections that confuse birds, and large frameless building designs. Weather conditions like fog and rain can reduce birds' visibility of urban structures, raising  the risk of collisions with bui...
